The National Population Conference 2022, or Persidangan Kependudukan Kebangsaan 2022 (PERKKS22), continued the momentum of LPPKNβs rebranded national population conference series, which originated from LPPKNβs population conference initiatives since 2006. The 2022 edition further strengthened PERKKS as a national platform for evidence-based dialogue on population, family development and Malaysiaβs socio-economic future.
PERKKS22 was held onΒ 10β11 November 2022Β atΒ Bangi Resort Hotel, Selangor, in aΒ hybrid formatΒ that combined physical participation with online access. This approach enabled wider engagement among policymakers, researchers, academics, practitioners, government agencies and stakeholders from across Malaysia. Carrying the themeΒ βPemerkasaan Penduduk dan Keluarga, Teras Negara Majuβ, PERKKS22 highlighted the importance of strong, resilient and well-supported families as the foundation of national progress. The conference also featured a keynote address byΒ Dr. Asa Torkelsson, Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Malaysia, reflecting the relevance of population and family issues within both national and global development agendas.
Objectives
PERKKS22 aimed to strengthen evidence-based discussion on population and family development issues, particularly in the context of post-pandemic recovery, national family policy, sustainable economic development and youth reproductive health. It also served as a platform to connect research findings with policy thinking, programme planning and strategic action.
Programme and Plenary Sessions
The conference featured three main plenary/panel sessions:
Session 1: Post-Pandemic Families: Strengthening the National Family Policy
This session discussed the realities faced by families after the pandemic and the importance of strengthening policy, support systems and family resilience.
Session 2: Population and Sustainable Economic Development
This session examined the link between demographic change, population structure and Malaysiaβs long-term economic sustainability.
Session 3: Youth: The Future of Sexual Education and Reproductive Health in Malaysia
This session focused on young people, reproductive health literacy and the importance of preparing youth with accurate knowledge, values and support systems.
Key Outcomes
PERKKS22 successfully reinforced LPPKNβs role as a national leader in population and family development discourse. Through its hybrid format, the conference expanded access to knowledge sharing and enabled broader participation from multiple sectors.
The conference also strengthened policy conversations around the family as a foundation of national development. By addressing post-pandemic family challenges, sustainable population development and youth reproductive health, PERKKS22 contributed to a stronger evidence-based understanding of Malaysiaβs evolving demographic and family landscape.
Overall, PERKKS22 positioned PERKKS as a strategic national platform for translating population insights into policy ideas, partnerships and future action for stronger Malaysian families.
