The National Population Conference 2025, or PERKKS25, continued LPPKNβs role as a national platform for evidence-based discourse on population, family development and Malaysiaβs long-term social transformation. As part of LPPKNβs population conference series initiated since 2006, PERKKS25 further strengthened the conference as a strategic space for researchers, policymakers, practitioners and stakeholders to examine emerging demographic challenges and translate research insights into policy directions.
PERKKS25 was held fromΒ 19 to 21 November 2025Β atΒ Eastin Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The conference carried the themeΒ βPopulation Megatrends and Family Dynamics: Challenges for a Better Quality Futureβ, reflecting the urgency of addressing major shifts in fertility, ageing, gender, family well-being, environmental sustainability and population data systems.
Objectives
PERKKS25 aimed to discuss emerging population dynamics and their relationship with national development, while providing a platform for academics, researchers and practitioners to present research findings in the areas of population, family development and reproductive health. The conference also sought to generate evidence-based recommendations that could support improvements to existing policies, programmes and interventions.
Programme Focus
PERKKS25 focused on six key areas: fertility, mortality and migration trends; demographic transition and implications for social welfare, labour markets and public policy; gender, womenβs empowerment and family issues; population-environment interactions and sustainable development; population and development policies and programmes; and methods for data collection, analysis and dissemination for population research and policy.
The conference also discussed critical issues such as declining fertility, population ageing, womenβs empowerment and family well-being in the context of Malaysiaβs changing social and economic landscape.
Participation
PERKKS25 brought togetherΒ more than 250 participants, includingΒ 150 presentersΒ comprising researchers, policymakers, academics, government agencies, the private sector and international organisations. This broad participation reflected the growing importance of population and family issues as shared national concerns that require evidence-based and cross-sector solutions.
Key Outcomes
PERKKS25 strengthened national conversations on how Malaysia can respond to population megatrends and changing family dynamics in a more comprehensive, progressive and evidence-based manner. It reinforced the importance of data-driven population policy, digital resilience and inclusive approaches across generations. The conference also provided an important platform for research presentation and policy reflection, enabling researchers and stakeholders to contribute ideas that can inform future policy directions, programme planning and intervention strategies. PERKKS25 reaffirmed LPPKNβs role as a national convener of population and family development discourse, while positioning demographic evidence as a foundation for building a better quality future for Malaysian families.
