KUALA LUMPUR: The government, through the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), is providing special subsidies for B40 and M40 couples struggling to conceive.
The assistance is provided under the Fertility Treatment Assistance and Infertility Advocacy (BuAI) programme, said LPPKN chairman Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.
Speaking to reporters after the National-Level World Population Day 2026 celebration, Rohani said fertility treatment could be costly, and the subsidy was aimed at easing the financial burden on lower- and middle-income families.
“On fertility, that’s back to us. We came out with a programme called BuAI. Many couples have been married but find it hard to conceive. Treatment is expensive.
“So the government, through the National Population and Family Development Board, gives special subsidies for B40 and M40 couples,” she said.
Rohani said LPPKN had also expanded its approach to address male infertility, which had traditionally been overlooked, with difficulties in conceiving often assumed to be the wife’s issue alone.
“In the past, people always blamed the wife if they couldn’t have kids, but now we find it’s also the men,” she said.
“We have a couple who didn’t give up after 12 years, and now she is seven months pregnant. We’ve even had twins and triplets from this programme,” she added.
The New Straits Times reported in May that 47,000 couples were expected to benefit from the BuAI programme this year, with financing for up to two intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles, prioritising the B40 group after screening.
