Family Well-Being Index 2025

The Malaysian Family Well-Being Index 2025, or FWBI-5, is the fifth series of LPPKN’s national study on family well-being. It continues the long-term monitoring initiative that began in 2011 and was subsequently conducted in 2016, 2019 and 2022. The 2025 series reflects LPPKN’s continued commitment to measuring, understanding and strengthening the well-being of families in Malaysia through reliable and evidence-based data. The study is introduced to provide updated insights into the current state of Malaysian families and to support the development of more comprehensive, practical and responsive strategies, initiatives, programmes and interventions. As family needs continue to evolve due to socio-economic changes, digital transformation, work-life demands and post-pandemic adjustments, FWBI-5 will serve as an important reference for strengthening family-centred policies and services.

Domains and Measurement

FWBI-5 maintains eight key domains of family well-being:

  • Family Relationships
  • Family Economy
  • Family Health
  • Family Safety
  • Housing and Environment
  • Family and Community Involvement
  • Family, Role of Religion and Spiritual Practices
  • Family and Communication Technology

The index used a maximum score of 10. A higher score indicates a higher level of family well-being. The overall index score was calculated based on the average scores across the seven domains.

Methodology

The study involvesΒ 9,180 selected living quartersΒ throughout Malaysia. These living quarters were randomly selected based on the National Household Sampling Frame from the 2020 Malaysia Population and Housing Census provided by the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

The respondents are mothers or fathers with children aged betweenΒ 3 and 24 years old. Data collection is conducted through face-to-face interviews using digital questionnaires viaΒ Computer Assisted Personal Interviews (CAPI), fromΒ March to May 2025.

Expected Output

The findings of the Malaysian Family Well-Being Index 2025 are expected to be released byΒ August 2026. Once released, the results will provide the latest national evidence on the level of family well-being in Malaysia and support the development of more targeted policy recommendations, family programmes and intervention strategies. FWBI-5 will strengthen the continuity of Malaysia’s family well-being data series and provide LPPKN with updated evidence to monitor progress, identify emerging family challenges and guide future efforts to build stronger, healthier and more resilient families.
