Malaysian Population and Family Survey (MPFS 5) 2014

The Fifth Malaysian Population and Family Survey (MPFS-5) 2014, is the fifth series of LPPKN’s national survey on population and family development. As a continuation of the previous survey series, MPFS-5 provides updated and comparable evidence on Malaysia’s changing demographic trends, family life, fertility, reproductive health, ageing, adolescents and social well-being.

Objectives

The main objectives of MPFS-5 were to:-Provide current and nationally representative information on population, family and reproductive health in Malaysia;-Update key indicators obtained from previous Malaysian Population and Family Survey series;-Generate time-series data related to family demography and its linkages with national development;-Examine changes in marriage, fertility, family structure, family interaction, ageing, adolescent development and reproductive health;-Support evidence-based policy planning, programme development and strategic interventions in population and family development.

Coverage and Respondents

MPFS-5 covered both urban and rural areas across Malaysia, including interior areas in selected states. The survey focused on households living in housing units and excluded institutional living quarters such as hostels, hotels, hospitals, elderly homes, prisons and welfare homes. A total of 23,112 living quarters were visited during fieldwork. From this, information was successfully obtained from 14,156 households, covering 57,246 household members.

In addition to household-level information, MPFS-5 collected detailed data from five main respondent groups, namely:- Ever-married women aged 15–59 years;- Ever-married men aged 15–59 years;- Never-married adolescents aged 13–24 years;- Older persons aged 60 years and above;- Single adults aged 25–49 years.

In total, the survey involved 22,582 individual respondents across these five target groups, comprising 7,644 ever-married women, 4,167 ever-married men, 5,304 adolescents, 4,059 older persons and 1,408 single adults.

Key Outputs and Achievements

MPFS-5 produced a national report which presents key national findings across major population and family development themes, including population structure, household characteristics, family formation, family life, social interaction, women and career, fertility and reproductive health. The study provided important empirical evidence on changes in marriage patterns, family dynamics, fertility behaviour, reproductive health practices, adolescent knowledge and behaviour, ageing, social support, family values and work-family balance. These findings have contributed to LPPKN’s role as a key national agency in advising the Government on population and family development matters.
